As the only trauma center and the only designated pediatric healthcare center in south Orange County, California, Mission Hospital provides critical services to the community. Mission’s doctors and nurses rely on high-value moveable medical equipment like gurneys, wound vacs and breast pumps to care for patients. In many cases, they need the equipment ready and waiting as soon as a patient is admitted.
But before working with Vizzia Technologies, nearly 14 percent of Mission’s moveable medical equipment was lost or stolen annually. The equipment that wasn’t lost or stolen was often difficult to find, forcing nurses to spend time away from their patients to search for equipment. Staff even hoarded equipment to ensure they had what they needed. As a result, the hospital was renting and purchasing extra equipment to ensure they had enough. All this was costing Mission hundreds of thousands of dollars each year.
Mission partnered with Vizzia to deploy Vizzia’s cost-effective, accurate asset management solution. Vizzia installed a network of tracking devices throughout the hospital and tagged more than 1,300 pieces of equipment. The tracking devices provide room-level accuracy about each item’s real-time location, transmitting valuable data to Vizzia’s advanced mapping and analytics software.
Nurses, biomed technicians and other staffers use Vizzia’s user-friendly software to locate the devices they need when they need them. Vizzia’s software also tracks cleaning and maintenance of the equipment and shows how many devices are currently available. The software alerts key staff when a device needs cleaning or maintenance, when a device exits the hospital, or when the quantity of a specific type of item falls below the acceptable level in the clean storage area.
Management of the equipment is outsourced to Vizzia. Vizzia team members work on site at the hospital, tracking and locating equipment, cleaning items and delivering them to the appropriate storage areas. The Vizzia team also uses data to help Mission optimize its stocking levels and operating procedures.
How It Works: Asset Management
- Vizzia installs network devices on ceilings throughout the hospital. Vizzia designs and deploys the system, installs software and trains staff.
- Each piece of equipment that requires tracking is outfitted with a small tag that contains a unique identification code.
- Asset tags share location information with network devices. That information is transmitted to a server and then to Vizzia’s advanced mapping and analytics software
- Hospital staffers use Vizzia’s software to view the real-time location of each asset. They can also search for specific devices and run detailed reports.
Vizzia’s RTLS system began generating returns for Mission immediately. After a year, the system had made such an impact that Mission’s rate of lost or stolen equipment dropped to 0 percent. This saved the hospital $150,000 per year. Mission also reduced rentals, eliminated new-equipment purchases and outsourced management of equipment distribution, saving $600,000 total. At the same time, nurse satisfaction scores improved dramatically—nurses could now spend more time caring for patients and less time looking for equipment.
